Flat Pattern Design by Allyne Bane

Allyne Bane, Flat Pattern Design

Who was this lady, Allyne Bane, who made all of her own clothing and worked as head of the instruction sheet department for both Simplicity and Butterick Pattern Companies in New York?

Allyne Banes had no intentions on going into Home Economics after graduating college.  In fact she studied history but upon being advised on the scarcity of jobs in the field-particularly for women, she selected home economics as better alternative to physical education.

She went on to teach in Ohio, including the Ohio School of Design where she taught men in the garment industry, and was also a regular speaker at various events related to home economics, sewing and fashion throughout her career.

She also managed to write at least three books, “Creative Sewing”, “Creative Clothing Construction”, “Tailoring”, and “Flat Pattern Design”.

Flat Pattern Design, 1972 (McGraw-Hill) is 237 (no including the index) pages of “meat”-pure useable information.  It’s another textbook (LOVE those).

After the main body of the text there are 11 single-sided pages of pattern pieces (quarter and half scales) to photocopy and use while working through the book as you’re learning the craft of flat pattern making.
