And now, how to join the nursery rhyme quilt blocks together, without allowance for seams, approximately 56 x 63 inches.
A soft side of blue or pink is suggested for joining the embroidered blocks into a quilt. Five yards of 36-inch material are needed if the same color is used for joining, for making the border, for lining and for binding the edge of the of the finished quilt.
The material for the ling should be taken first by cutting the entire length of the quilt which is 63 inches, not deducting for seams. One piece will be 36 inches wide and the other 20 inches wide.
The two pieces for the border seven inches wide may then be cut 63 inches long. Then cut the other two seven-inch border pieces 42 inches long. For the material remaining cut 21 blocks in seven-inch squares to be used for joining the embroidered quilt blocks as pictured. The material that is left may be cut into one and one-half inch strips for binding the finished quilt.
In sewing the quilt blocks together, start with the upper left hand corner block in the inserted diagram, “Hickory, Dickory,” Sew a plain seven-inch square of the colored material to the bottom of the embroidered block and join to another embroidered block until a strip of four embroidered blocks and three blocks have been connected.
For the second strip, start with a plain block and join with an embroidered block until a strip consists of four plain blocks and three embroidered blocks.
Joint the two strips of blocks together by sewing with a simple stitch.
Continue until all of th blocks are joined in this manner as illustrated above.
Sew the 42-inch border onto the top and bottom of the quilt and then attach the remaining border pieces.
Join the lining pieces and arrange over them the cotton and then the pieced top, which had had the quilting design traced on it. The quilting design will appear next week.
If your child’s bed will not accommodate as large a quilt as the one illustrated, the border may be made smaller or can be omitted entirely. For a narrower quilt, use 20 nursery blocks and make the quilt five blocks wide and eight blocks long, set together in the same manner as illustrated.
