Mary had a little lamb block no 1This first quilt block depicts “Mary had a little lamb” nursery rhyme.

The slate:  Outlined in black with simple stitch or red forming the border around the slate.  Black or shades of brown embroidery floss may be used for her shoes and white for the pantaloons.

The road:  Outlined in brown or dark gray with green grass interspersed.

The Lamb:  Outline in white embroidery floss with the hoofs in beige or deep cream.  The nostrils are embroidered in flesh or pale pink.

Mary’s dress and bonnet:  Outlined in yellow with white French knots for the buttons down the back of the bodice.  The flowers on the bonnet and those growing along the road may be done in pastel shades using the loop stitch and leaves also in loop stitch.

Facial outline and arm:  A deep cream or beige embroidery floss is suggested with red for the lips, blue for the eye and a light brown for the hair.

Feather stitch the braids and outline stitch for the bows worn at the end of the braids and for Mary’s socks.  Next weeks block:  Little Boy Blue.
