The Complete Photo Guide to Perfect Fitting is available in softback, but I purchased it as a Kindle download for just under $10.00. Hard copies are available on Amazon starting (used) at $15.51. The original list price is $24.99-still affordable.
I got it on Kindle because I love a bargain and I wanted to start putting my Kindle to good use. It’s snowing today, so I’m going to curl up on a couch (along with a down cover) and savor my new “sewing book” for the rest of the afternoon. That is—as soon as I can get this short post done.
So, is this book worth buying?
ABSOLUTELY!
I’m loving it. Alot of books written today aren’t really worth their salt (that’s my opinion). By that I mean they’re usually just a bunch of pretty pictures of completed garments or lone standing photos that don’t give me what I’m looking for-useful information I can actually use and apply to my art.
Because sewing is a skill requiring demonstration I want alot of photos, illustrations and graphics. But I also want text that’s relevant and useful. Lastly, I don’t want a regurgitation of common sense information or of the same old information that’s already out there by the tons. For example, I don’t want to buy a sewing book that has three pages on “How to Baste”.
Newer books tend to have that problem-pretty, but pointless. Don’t get me wrong there are some good newer sewing books out there-but there are also a TON of useless ones. This is the MAIN reason I look for good vintage goods to satisfy my thirst for sewing knowledge. They always have something extra to offer. Probably has alot to do with being written during a time when sewing was at its peak.
With that said- I was skeptical about buying a “modern” sewing book. Especially one with the word “photo” in the title.
I’m glad I got over it because this book is worth every cent. The book begins with the basics and gradually (methodically) graduates the reader to the next level. Easy to read-not alot of jargan. And there’s information I haven’t come across elsewhere or information I didn’t know. That’s not to say I’m an expert at anything-it’s just nice to see new-relevant information gracing the pages of a book.
There are ALOT of photos, but they’re helpful and beneficial to learning. I feel like I’m in a classroom-a productive classroom.
To jump right in pull out at least these tools:
I especially love the section explaining and demonstrating the usage of styling rulers. There’s also a detailed section on fitting muslins. I know alot of people are interested in using muslins as part of their regular sewing routines these days.
The Complete Photo Guide to Perfect Fitting is a “hands on get up and do it with me book.”
I’m giving it an A+ and a suggestion to please buy one for yourself. I’m getting myself a hardcopy as well.
