What Is A Sewing Lounge

Sewing lounges: the Starbucks for the seamstress

Modern Sewing Parlor

Sewing lounges, a Starbucks for sewing enthusiastic of sort, is a modern day twist of the home sewing room and an old-time sewing circle.

A community space for sewers looking for some method of sharing their combined creative passions, nourish creativity and gather together to share common experiences and feed their stitching souls.

A sewing lounge isn’t a fabric or sewing machine store. In fact, there might not be anything to buy, except for an offering of classes at minimal cost and of your own free will.

It’s a meeting place.  It’s a sewing studio.  It’s a place to sew.

Sewing hobbyists from beginner to seasoned expert meet, sew, learn and share as members of a community, reminiscent of an old-time sewing circle.

The DC Thread Sewing Loungewas founded through a partnership with the DC Department of Parks and Recreation and Greater Washington Fashion Chamber of Commerce. The program is entirely free offering in-house use of equipment, instruction, free patterns and plenty of camaraderie.

Sew Crafty Houston, offers much of the same in an open space, as well as sewing classes at cost and the ability to rent the space out for private parties: girl’s nights out and children parties.

Most have sewing machines, equipment and cutting tables on-hand for participants to use as they work on their individual sewing projects.

As sewing becomes more popular and more beginners are getting the sewing bug, more lounges are rearing their heads. A random internet search results in any number of available sewing lounges around the country.

Sewing lounges are there to nourish the soul in an ambiance as comforting as a friend’s living room.

Once again everything old is new again.  Create one in your community.
