Gabrielle Coco Chanel
Gabrielle Chanel’s early life difficulties inspired Chanel to live a life not quite within constraints of popular mainstream. This philosophy was also Chanel’s (nicknamed Coco when she worked as a singer), design philosophy.
At a time when women were confined in long skirts, heavy dresses, padding, petticoats and corsets, Chanel’s designs removed such restraints, shortened skirts and placed women in suits.
Women became women.
Chanel opened her first shop in Paris in 1913. A milliner by craft, Chanel sold only hats and a limited line of garments made primarily from jersey. At the time jersey was only used in men’s underwear.
Equally known for her accessories and fragrances, Chanel‘s tiny Parisian shop would come to be known as the House of Chanel. Although Coco initially began working with jersery because it was inexpensive, she continued to work with jersey throughout her career. Menswear also remained an inspiration in many of her famed designs.
Today, the name Chanel represents style, sophistication and class.
