Clothing Construction
Clothing Construction by Evelyn A. Mansfield is probably one of the best sewing books ever written. Every home sewer and sewing classroom should have this one in their sewing library.
Format: Hardback Year: 1953
Preface
The aim of this book is to explain dressmaking procedures as clearly as a teacher might explain then by firsthand demonstration to an to an individual student. To this end it includes over five hundred photographs and over a hundred drawings, specifically made to show construction procedures step by step as they were worked out in actual garments….
It is the purpose of this book to supply illustrative material as well as explanations for many procedures, so that the student can work with greater independence….
Underlying the writing of the book is the belief that making good clothes is a form of artistic expression…
This book really does live up to what it hoped to accomplish. It’s packed with over 400 pages of text. Nearly each page contains a detailed photograph, illustration, diagram or chart. Nineteen chapters on topics including: sewing equipment, basic hand sewing stitches, seam construction, pattern alteration, sleeves, pockets and pressing.
There are also four appendices and a full index.
An extremely detailed textbook.
Some older sewing books contain alot of flowery worded fluff. Clothing Construction gets right to the point in plain simple language in full illustrative detail.
This book has been the source of a few bidding wars on eBay; resulting in more than a few pennies being shelled out. It’s available on Amazon sometimes at a set price.
In any case, this book is worth it’s weight in gold!
