How to sew with vintage Vogue sewing patterns
In 1949, Vogue offered its first haute couture designer patterns. These patterns were reproductions of original toiles from Parisian designers: Christian Dior, Pierre Balmain, Pierre Cardin, Molyneux, Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent, Emanuel Ungaro, Guy and Michel Goma of the House of Patou.
The collection was expanded to include American, Spanish, Italian, Irish and English designers: Fabiani, Pucci, Simonetta, Forquet, Valentino, Bill Blass, Donald Brooks, James Galanus, Oscar de la Renta, Sybil Connolly, Belinda Bellville, Pertegaz and Jo Mattle.
The designer element, large format envelopes, the availability of designer labels with some of the patterns and supplemental depictions in still popular today, Vogue magazine helped popularize the brand.

Working with Large Format Vintage Vogue
Ladies could purchase Vogue patterns at fine stores, or by order patterns from Vogue Pattern Service via mail.
Vintage Vogue patterns are both printed and unprinted. They are often referred to as Large Format Vintage Vogues due to their larger than usual pattern envelope. General instruction sheets include an “Easy to follow guide”. The cutting layouts are detailed and easy to understand. Because Vogue designer patterns were made from slopers of couture designers, many of the fashions contained underlinings and linings. It’s important if you’re working with Vogue patterns to learn these techniques. Construction instructions could be lengthy and patterns included as few as five pattern pieces or up to 26 depending on the design.
