Aren’t these wooden spools of thread beautiful?  My sister-in-law picked them up for me while out on a thrift hunt.

They are:  Empeco, Hi-Test, Belding Corticelli (silk), Betso Twist, Primrose, Fleischer & Sons and Talon.

What to consider when purchasing thread for your creation?

  • Color:  Choose a shade one shade darker than your chosen garment.
  • Size
  • Fiber (cotton, silk or nylon)

pastel threadsFor home sewing there are two sizes of colored cotton threads:  mercerized and heavy duty.

What is mercerized thread?

It’s the process in which cotton yarns are immersed, under tension, in a caustic soda solution.  The cotton fibers are permanently changed in character, causing the yarns to gain in strength and luster.

What is heavy duty thread?

This thread provides the strength needed for heavier fabrics such as draperies and slip covers.

Silk Thread

There are two size used for domestic use:  silk and buttonhole twist.

Nylon Thread

Nylon is resistant to wear and tear.  It’ s light-weight.  And it has the ability to take repeated stretching without losing elasticity.

Has a low melting point and shouldn’t be used on cottons and linens.  It melts at 480 degrees F., an iron heated to cotton and linen temperature my damage nylon stitching.

Use nylon thread, when high temperature ironing isn’t required.
