Embracing Your Inner Housewife

Like Australian mums, I’m embracing my “inner housewife” for the sake of emancipation, if not economic salvation.

The new-look domestic diva is transforming the housewife image of old.  A new queen is emerging.

I’m growing my own veggies and making as many of my own clothes as I can, in a bid to live as organic and locally as humanly possible; while saving a buck.

I love doing it.

According to the article in Australia’s Herald Sun online, younger women (I don’t believe age is really a factor) are returning to the domestic crafts: sewing, cooking, knitting and gardening due to economic and “green” living concerns.

In 2008, sells of both sewing machine and vegetable gardening rose 30%, while knitting product sells rose 20 percent.  Australian mums also spent 3.9bn on nappies (cloth diapers).

It’s believed the swift back to domestic arts demonstrates a new attitude toward motherhood in Australia.

Just who are these new self-sufficient domestic goddesses’, these re-kindlers of the domestic arts, these new paragons of homespun aprons?
• She’s a canny business woman, intelligent and accomplished; readily turning her domestic skills into a thriving home business.
• She’s a blogger.
• She’s part of a dedicated global community of women swapping sewing patterns, craft ideas and recipes.
• She’s concerned first about her family’s holistic well-being, followed closely by the global community.
• She believes her skills have importance and value.

What are  you doing to embrace  your inner housewife?
