Because everything is in walking distance, Benson manages to hold onto its natural ambiance of small town living.
You just want to park your car and stroll shop to shop.
Residents enjoy the conveniences and security of quaint, small city living: a tailor, a dry cleaner, a health food store, a grocer, a post office, a pizza shop, small professional offices (doctors and lawyers), churches, and schools; along with the nearby amenities associated with the “big city life” of Omaha.
Since the 1970s small town storefronts have been boarding up their windows, but one of the last remnants of Main Street America, the thrift store, remains.
One such remnant in the Benson shopping district is Tip Top Thrift Shop, 5910 Maple St. In operation since 1955 and a resident of Benson since 1990, Tip Top is a tip top place to shop.
Most people only think of thrifts as dirty little places full of other people’s unwanted junk. Not true, quite the opposite. Thrift shops are unusual eclectic places, but they’re clean, well-organized and inviting. Tip Top is no exception. While you’ll certainly find new and vintage sewing supplies and crafting books, you’ll also find everything from clothing, shoes, and house wares to furniture and collectibles.
You just never know what you’ll find. Tip Top is no exception. That’s part of the fun of shopping thrifts.
While not all thrift stores are non-profit operations, Tip Top is and 100 percent of the organizations proceeds go to Uta Halee Girls Village. Uta Halee offers treatment to 12 to 18-year old at risk youth.
Pay Tip Top Thrift Shop a visit. It’s where volunteers greet you with a smile and pleasant conversation, and where a bargain or treasure is waiting to be found.
Tip Top Thrift Shop is open Monday through Saturday 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Donations are appreciated.
